Amy, Blog, Down Syndrome

Happy Birthday, Amy!

It is Amy’s birthday on Easter. She is 26. I remember the day she was born, we didn’t know she had Down Syndrome and after a difficult birth, our doctor suggested we have a karyotype done. I didn’t even know what that meant! Needless to say, our lives and understanding of life have changed. A karyotype is a blood test to check chromosomes. Amy showed that she had Down Syndrome and Leukemia. We had no idea what to expect with this diagnosis!  Amy survived leukemia and has been such a blessing to our lives. We have joked about starting a T-shirt company with Amy’s saying on them. They would say things like “Later” and “you bug me off” and “Cheeseburger…NOW” I know a lot of people have not experienced the world of special needs, but once you do, you understand why we call ourselves “the lucky few” We are the lucky few that God chose to share His special ones with….and oh how lucky we are. Amy lives at home and helps us hold puppies and literally makes us smile every single day. Her outlook on life is so healthy. She is so content with a coffee and a cone! The littlest things make her day. Amy has taught me so much about life, patience, enjoying the little things, and true pure love.
We have a puppy in our litter of 11 girls that was born without a front paw. We believe we are one of the “lucky few” to be able to love this little one and place her in a very special home where she will be an excellent therapy dog. I will post more about her in the coming weeks.

I want to take the time to wish all of you a blessed Easter. It is a day of celebrating new life, which I am reminded of almost daily through Amy and all these amazing puppies.  Truly feeling “lucky”!
